JSW Steel’s carbon steel production is spread across a wider geographic footprint than most Indian competitors, with facilities strategically placed near ports, iron ore belts, and key end-user industries.
Vijayanagar, Karnataka — The Flagship Plant
JSW Steel’s Vijayanagar plant began operating in 1994 and ranks as the world’s sixth-largest steel plant. Located at Toranagallu village in the Ballari-Hospete iron ore belt, the fully integrated 10,000-acre facility is well connected to both Goa and Chennai ports. It is India’s largest single-location steel-producing facility, with a capacity of 17.5 MTPA (with additional capacity under commissioning).
The plant isn’t just large — it’s technologically distinct. Vijayanagar was the first plant in India to use Corex technology for hot metal production, and it houses India’s widest hot strip mill and one of the country’s largest blast furnaces, while achieving ‘zero-effluent discharge’ status by reusing more than 95% of its process waste. On efficiency, the plant produces over 800 tonnes per person annually, making it the most productive steel plant in India.
Dolvi Works, Maharashtra — The West Coast Hub
Strategically located on the west coast, Dolvi Works is a 10 MTPA integrated facility that gives JSW a strong logistics advantage for western Indian markets and exports.
Salem Works, Tamil Nadu — Automotive Focus
JSW’s Salem plant benefits from Tamil Nadu’s position as a leading automobile and auto-components hub, being close to both Chennai and Bangalore — making it a key contributor to automotive-grade steel in South India.
BPSL (Jharsuguda), Odisha
Bhushan Power and Steel Limited’s Jharsuguda plant in Odisha adds 3.5 MTPA of capacity, acquired by JSW as part of its expansion into eastern India’s steel corridor.
Additional Facilities
Beyond the core integrated plants, JSW operates Tarapur Works — India’s largest producer of coated steel products — along with Kalmeshwar Works near Nagpur and Vasind Works near Mumbai, both dedicated coated-steel facilities serving domestic and export markets.

Taken together, JSW Steel’s Indian manufacturing facilities include Vijayanagar (12.0 MTPA base, since expanded to 17.5 MTPA), Dolvi (10.0 MTPA), Salem (1.0 MTPA), the BPSL Jharsuguda plant (3.5 MTPA), and the Raigarh/Raipur plants in Chhattisgarh (1.2 MTPA combined).
Why the Spread Matters
JSW’s plant distribution — Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh — gives it broader domestic market access than a single-region operator, while its newer plants at Dolvi and Salav benefit from modern technology and port proximity, avoiding much of the inefficiency of older brownfield facilities.
